Looking after Westgate Wood.

Many thanks to the Boston Woods Trust volunteers who have been busy at work removing dead and dying trees from Westgate Wood. A large number of ash trees have caught a fungal disease that causes ash dieback. These are being removed as they are a hazard for walkers and dogs. Some wood is being left to decay naturally in situ providing habitat for many woodland creatures. The excess is being recycled. The larger logs are for sale, if you are interested please phone Steve on 07759 087479, all money raised goes towards funding the BWT project. The brash will be chipped and the chippings are used to mulch new trees planted in Dions Woods Nature Reserve.
Although it is sad to be losing these trees the trust would have been thinning the woods anyway to allow the better trees to have room to grow and keep healthy. The next job will be to cane and guard good new tree seedlings to protect them and to establish the succession of trees for the future. It is hoped that some of them will have an immunity to ash dieback as has happened in other parts of the world.
