Orienteering

Welcome to Westgate Woods Orienteering.

Provided by:- Boston and District Scout Association with The Boston Woods Trust.

Thank you to the Lincoln Orienteering club for their help with the mapping and course setting.

Orienteering is an exciting outdoor adventure sport which involves walking or running whilst navigating around a course using a detailed map and sometimes a compass.   The aim is to navigate in sequence between a set of control points and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.  It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.

In Westgate there are 2 Permanent Orienteering courses set up,

  1. Easy – 10 checkpoints (controls) over 1.9KM the controls should not be difficult to find.

  2.  Difficult – 13 checkpoints (controls) over 3 Km , some of the controls are the same as the easy course but others will be more difficult to find and will test your map reading skills!

Instructions

Decide which course you want to follow and download the detailed maps here.

Find the start on the map and make your way there.

Follow the map to the first control, this looks like this :-

Note down on the answer sheet the letter written on the control and then move on to the next control, follow the entire course in sequence.

It does not have to be a race but it could be. The most important thing is to get out there , have fun and enjoy the peaceful woodland environment.

**IF YOU ARE DOING THE “ DIFFICULT”  COURSE, PLEASE BE CAREFUL OF THE ROAD**

If you have enjoyed this course why not give a donation ?

This will help support the valuable work of the Boston Woods Trust.

Thank you.
